CHIMP Method

Created and perfected by Prime-8 Fitness, the Compound High-Intensity Metabolic Performance (CHIMP) method of training is designed to maximize your time spent in the gym by burning fat and building muscle through high-intensity interval training.

The idea behind the CHIMP Method is simple. Instead of spending all of your time on low-intensity steady state cardio activities such as jogging or biking, break up your training into high-intensity intervals with periods of lower-intensity active recovery. Studies have shown that this type of training will stimulate your system to burn more fat during your exercise session while also keeping your metabolism elevated long after your training session has finished. Low-intensity steady state exercising may produce temporary weight loss, but your metabolism will likely adjust to a new baseline for maintaining your weight and make it harder to keep weight off. Also, low-intensity cardio, combined with a low-calorie diet, can be a recipe for muscle loss.

Compound training, or combining two or more exercises into one, is a key element of the CHIMP Method. For example, by combining a squat with a shoulder press to engage both the lower and upper halves of the body during the same exercise, you increase the amount of muscle mass stimulated and burn more calories. It’s ideal to incorporate as many joint movements as possible into an exercise, and compound training always involves more than one joint.
